(1) Background: This study comprehensively compared robotic pancreatic surgery with vascular resection (RPS-VR) to other surgical procedures in the treatment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). (2) Methods: A systematic review of relevant literature was conducted to assess a range of crucial surgical and oncological outcomes. (3) Results: Findings indicate that robotic surgery with vascular resections (VRs) significantly prolongs the duration of surgery compared to other surgical procedures, and they notably demonstrate an equal hospital stay. While some studies reported a lower conversion rate and a higher rate of blood loss and blood transfusion in the RPS-VR group, others found no significant disparity. Furthermore, RPS-VR consistently correlated with comparable recurrence rates, free margins R0, postoperative mortality, and complication rates. Concerning the last one, certain reviews reported a higher rate of major complications. Overall survival and disease-free survival remained comparable between the RPS-VR and other surgical techniques in treating PDAC. (4) Conclusions: The analysis emphasizes how RPS-VR is a resembling approach in terms of surgical outcomes and aligns with existing literature findings in this field.

The development of the latest generation of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) over recent decades has led to the discovery of new extreme astrophysical phenomena in the very-high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray regime. Time-domain and multi-messenger astronomy are inevitably connected to the physics of transient VHE emitters, which show unexpected (and mostly unpredictable) flaring or exploding episodes at different timescales. These transients often share the physical processes responsible for the production of the gamma-ray emission, through cosmic-ray acceleration, magnetic reconnection, jet production and/or outflows, and shocks interactions. In this review, we present an up-to-date overview of the VHE transients field, spanning from novae to supernovae, neutrino counterparts or fast radio bursts, among others, and we outline the expectations for future facilities.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic immune-mediated disease that, in addition to the articular involvement, can have extra-articular manifestations. Even though liver damage in RA is not very common, associated autoimmune liver diseases (AILDs) may occur. The most common AILD associated with RA is primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), followed by autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). There are common underlying mechanisms that play a role in the emergence of autoimmunity and inflammation in both rheumatic and autoimmune liver diseases. Genetic studies have revealed the existence of several common disease-associated genes shared between RA and AILDs, and infectious triggers, particularly those associated with recurrent or complicated urinary tract infections, are also speculated to be potential triggers for these conditions. Moreover, these diseases share common serologic patterns characterized by the presence of specific autoantibodies and hyper-gammaglobulinemia. In this study, we focus on reviewing the association between RA and AILDs regarding the prevalence and possible etiopathogenic link.

The continuous monitoring of the terrestrial Earth system by a growing number of optical satellite missions provides valuable insights into vegetation and cropland characteristics. Satellite missions typically provide different levels of data, such as level 1 top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance and level 2 bottom-of-atmosphere (BOA) reflectance products. Exploiting TOA radiance data directly offers the advantage of bypassing the complex atmospheric correction step, where errors can propagate and compromise the subsequent retrieval process. Therefore, the objective of our study was to develop models capable of retrieving vegetation traits directly from TOA radiance data from imaging spectroscopy satellite missions. To achieve this, we constructed hybrid models based on radiative transfer model (RTM) simulated data, thereby employing the vegetation SCOPE RTM coupled with the atmosphere LibRadtran RTM in conjunction with Gaussian process regression (GPR). The retrieval evaluation focused on vegetation canopy traits, including the leaf area index (LAI), canopy chlorophyll content (CCC), canopy water content (CWC), the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), and the fraction of vegetation cover (FVC). Employing band settings from the upcoming Copernicus Hyperspectral Imaging Mission (CHIME), two types of hybrid GPR models were assessed: (1) one trained at level 1 (L1) using TOA radiance data and (2) one trained at level 2 (L2) using BOA reflectance data. Both the TOA- and BOA-based GPR models were validated against in situ data with corresponding hyperspectral data obtained from field campaigns. The TOA-based hybrid GPR models revealed a range of performance from moderate to optimal results, thus reaching = 0.92 (LAI), = 0.72 (CCC) and 0.68 (CWC), = 0.94 (FAPAR), and = 0.95 (FVC). To demonstrate the models’ applicability, the TOA- and BOA-based GPR models were subsequently applied to imagery from the scientific precursor missions PRISMA and EnMAP. The resulting trait maps showed sufficient consistency between the TOA- and BOA-based models, with relative errors between and ( between 0.68 and 0.97). Altogether, these findings illuminate the path for the development and enhancement of machine learning hybrid models for the estimation of vegetation traits directly tailored at the TOA level.

Accurately predicting the active power output of offshore wind power is of great significance for reducing the uncertainty in new power systems. By utilizing the spatiotemporal correlation characteristics among wind turbine unit outputs, this paper embeds the Diffusion Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) into the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) for the feature extraction of spatiotemporal correlations in wind turbine unit outputs. It also combines graph structure learning to propose a sequence-to-sequence model for ultra-short-term power prediction in large offshore wind farms. Firstly, the electrical connection graph within the wind farm is used to preliminarily determine the reference adjacency matrix for the wind turbine units within the farm, injecting prior knowledge of the adjacency matrix into the model. Secondly, a convolutional neural network is utilized to convolve the historical curves of units within the farm along the time dimension, outputting a unit connection probability vector. The Gumbel–softmax reparameterization method is then used to make the probability vector differentiable, thereby generating an optimal adjacency matrix for the prediction task based on the probability vector. At the same time, the difference between the two adjacency matrices is added as a regularization term to the loss function to reduce model overfitting. The simulation of actual cases shows that the proposed model has good predictive performance in ultra-short-term power prediction for large offshore wind farms.

Patients with COVID-19 infection have distinct oropharyngeal microbiota composition and diversity metrics according to disease severity. However, these findings are not consistent across the literature. We conducted a multicenter, prospective study in patients with COVID-19 requiring outpatient versus inpatient management to explore the microbial abundance of taxa at the phylum, family, genus, and species level, and we utilized alpha and beta diversity indices to further describe our findings. We collected oropharyngeal washing specimens at the time of study entry, which coincided with the COVID-19 diagnosis, to conduct all analyses. We included 43 patients in the study, of whom 16 were managed as outpatients and 27 required hospitalization. Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Saccharibacteria TM7, Fusobacteria, and Spirochaetes were the most abundant phyla among patients, while 61 different families were detected, of which the Streptococcaceae and Staphylococcaceae families were the most predominant. A total of 132 microbial genera were detected, with Streptococcus being the predominant genus in outpatients, in contrast to hospitalized patients, in whom the Staphylococcus genus was predominant. LeFSe analysis identified 57 microbial species in the oropharyngeal washings of study participants that could discriminate the severity of symptoms of COVID-19 infections. Alpha diversity analysis did not reveal a difference in the abundance of bacterial species between the groups, but beta diversity analysis established distinct microbial communities between inpatients and outpatients. Our study provides information on the complex association between the oropharyngeal microbiota and SARS-CoV-2 infection. Although our study cannot establish causation, knowledge of specific taxonomic changes with increasing SARS-CoV-2 infection severity can provide us with novel clues for the prognostic classification of COVID-19 patients.

Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is a disorder characterized by dietary restrictions and an obsessive focus on “healthy” eating. The present study analyzes two aspects of ON. One related to the inner experiences of the individual (intrapersonal). The other concerns the impact of ON on interpersonal relationships (interpersonal). The developed scale was named the Intra- and Interpersonal Effects Scale of Orthorexia (IIESO). The analysis showed an average correlation between the INTER and INTRA factors (r = 0.46). Both the INTER and INTRA scales correlated strongly with both subscales of the TOS but weakly with the ORTO-R score. Females obtained higher scores on the INTER scale (p < 0.01), while no differences were shown for the INTRA subscale or the overall scale score (p < 0.01). Subjects using supplements had higher mean scores on the INTER and INTRA subscales and for the total score. Among the analyzed results, the greatest strength effect was shown for the total score on the IIESO scale (INTER+INTRA) and the TOS scale. The questionnaires used to date have not distinguished between behaviors from interpersonal and intrapersonal perspectives. Research on these dimensions could expand our knowledge of the disorder and refine diagnostic criteria.

Peri-urban regions, especially in the Mediterranean, face challenges like farmland loss due to urban pressure. This study emphasizes retail stores as strategic focal points for evaluating societal, economic, and production systems. It hypothesizes that analyzing retail stores in agricultural areas provides insights into traded and cultivated agrobiodiversity. Using the Baix Llobregat Agrarian Park (Catalonia, NE Iberian Peninsula) as a case study, this research examines different food retailers from short and conventional food supply chains. Results indicate variations in plant diversity, origin, and seasonality among different retail stores. Farmers’ markets exhibit higher intraspecific diversity, contributing to local agrobiodiversity conservation. This study observes temporal changes in farmers’ markets, highlighting shifts influenced by socioeconomic factors and climate change perceptions. Finally, this research underscores certain strategies to promote sustainable peri-urban local food systems and preserve agrobiodiversity, offering valuable insights into food supply chain dynamics in peri-urban agricultural regions.

There is no mouse model of patellar tendinopathy. This study aimed to establish a mouse inflammatory and degenerative patellar tendon injury model, which will facilitate research on patellar tendinopathy using advanced molecular tools including transgenic models. Collagenase at different doses (low dose (LD), medium dose (MD), high dose (HD)) or saline was injected over the mouse patellar tendon. At weeks 1, 2, 4, and 8 post-injection, the tendons were harvested for histology and further examined by micro-computed tomography (microCT) imaging at week 8. The optimal dose group and the saline group were further evaluated by immunohistochemical staining, gait pattern, and biomechanical properties. The histopathological score increased dose-dependently post-collagenase injection. Ectopic mineralization was observed and increased with collagenase dose. The LD group was selected for further analysis. The expression of IL-10, TNF-α, and MMP-1 significantly increased post-injection. The changes of limb idleness index (ΔLII) compared to preinjury state were significantly higher, while the ultimate load, stiffness, ultimate stress, and maximum Young’s modulus were significantly lower in the LD group compared to the saline group. A mouse inflammatory degenerative model of patellar tendon injury resembling tendinopathy was established as indicated by the dose-dependent increase in tendon histopathology, ectopic calcification, decrease in biomechanical properties, and pain-associated gait changes.

Water scarcity will increase due to climate change, especially in basins that are currently highly stressed. The Mediterranean area is one of the most vulnerable areas in the world, with a predicted natural water resource reduction of 20% to 35% at the end of the century, due to temperature increases and a 10–20% precipitation reduction. Water scarcity indices, including gross abstraction, net abstraction, and consideration of environmental requirements, can be efficiently used to analyse the effects of climate change in water resource systems and determine the main measures to adapt these systems to climate change. Increasing the reclaimed water use, seawater desalination, irrigation efficiency, and interconnecting water resource systems are the main measures to adapt basins under water stress and reduce their vulnerability to climate change. In the Júcar River Basin District (JRBD), with a 20% reduction in natural water resources, the main measures are: increasing the reclaimed water use in agriculture from 20% to 50% (91 hm3/year to 230 hm3/year), increasing seawater desalination from 30 to 55 hm3/year, increasing irrigation efficiency from 54% to 80%, and finally, fully developing the current water interconnections between water resource systems. In highly stressed basins, moving water from downstream to upstream using energy supplied by photovoltaic systems can help adapt river basins to climate change.

Huntington’s disease (HD) arises from the abnormal expansion of CAG repeats in the huntingtin gene (HTT), resulting in the production of the mutant huntingtin protein (mHTT) with a polyglutamine stretch in its N-terminus. The pathogenic mechanisms underlying HD are complex and not yet fully elucidated. However, mHTT forms aggregates and accumulates abnormally in neuronal nuclei and processes, leading to disruptions in multiple cellular functions. Although there is currently no effective curative treatment for HD, significant progress has been made in developing various therapeutic strategies to treat HD. In addition to drugs targeting the neuronal toxicity of mHTT, gene therapy approaches that aim to reduce the expression of the mutant HTT gene hold great promise for effective HD therapy. This review provides an overview of current HD treatments, discusses different therapeutic strategies, and aims to facilitate future therapeutic advancements in the field.

The increasing popularity of home brewing and the fast evolution of craft beer companies have fuelled the interest in novel yeasts as the main actors diversifying the beer portfolio. Here, we have characterized the thermal tolerance and brewing-related features of two sourdough (SD) isolates of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, SDy01 and SDy02, at different temperatures, 20 and 37 °C, comparing them with commercial brew strains, AaB and kNB. The SD strains exhibited tolerance to the main brewing-related stress conditions and increased growth rates and lower lag phases than the reference beer strains at both temperatures. Consistent with this, SDy01 and SDy02 displayed higher fermentative activity in terms of sugar rate depletion and the release of metabolic by-products. Moreover, SDy01 and SDy02 brewing at 20 °C increased their total amount of volatile compounds (VOCs), in particular, their esters and carboxyl compounds, as compared to the reference AaB strain. In contrast, fermentation at 37 °C resulted in a drastic reduction in the number of VOCs in wort fermented with SD yeast, especially in its level of esters. In conclusion, our results stress the high fermentative performance of SD strains in beer wort and their ability to provide a complex and specific aromatic profile at a wide range of temperatures.

This paper studies the single-machine group scheduling problem with convex resource allocation and learning effect. The number of jobs in each group is different, and the corresponding common due dates are also different, where the processing time of jobs follows a convex function of resource allocation. Under common due date assignment, the objective is to minimize the weighted sum of earliness, tardiness, common due date, resource consumption, and makespan. To solve the problem, we present the heuristic, simulated annealing, and branch-and-bound algorithms. Computational experiments indicate that the proposed algorithms are effective.

As the global energy landscape transitions towards a more sustainable future, hydrogen has emerged as a promising energy carrier due to its potential to decarbonize various sectors. However, the economic competitiveness of hydrogen production by water electrolysis strongly depends on renewable energy source (RES) availability. Thus, it is necessary to overcome the challenges related to the intermittent nature of RESs. This paper presents a comprehensive techno-economic analysis of complementing green hydrogen production with grid electricity. An evaluation model for the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) is proposed, considering both CO2 emissions and the influence of RES fluctuations on electrolyzers. A minimum load restriction is required to avoid crossover gas. Moreover, a new operation strategy is developed for hydrogen production plants to determine optimal bidding in the grid electricity market to minimize the LCOH. We evaluate the feasibility of the proposed approach with a case study based on data from the Kyushu area in Japan. The results show that the proposed method can reduce the LCOH by 11% to 33%, and increase hydrogen productivity by 86% to 140%, without significantly increasing CO2 emission levels.

The catch composition of a coastal gillnet fishery in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea was analyzed through a two-year experimental fishing survey. Seven fish species occurred regularly in the hauls. Surmullet, Mullus surmuletus, which is the most valuable demersal fish in Greek waters and the intended target of the gillnets in small-scale fisheries, was the most abundant and systematically caught species. Almost all surmullets were larger than their minimum conservation reference size. However, three commercially exploited species (Diplodus annularis, Pagellus acarne, and P. erythrinus) were caught systematically as undersized individuals. In addition, these three species were caught mostly as immature individuals. Moreover, the operational season of the surveyed métier overlapped completely with the reproductive period of five commercially exploited species (D. annularis, M. barbatus, M. surmuletus, Sphyraena sphyraena, and Trachurus trachurus). Improvements and the establishment of additional technical measurements should be considered for the small-scale gillnet fisheries in the studied area to attenuate their detrimental effects and achieve a better compromise between sustainable exploitation of the local multi-species fish resources and the need for an economically sustainable practice.

Photopolymers, especially acrylate-based ones with low cost and simple preparation, are promising materials for high-efficiency holographic gratings. However, it is still challenging to achieve high-performance gratings, due to the influences of many factors. In this work, we found that the dark reaction plays a critical role. The effect of the dark reaction on the optical properties of holographic gratings was investigated. Experimental results reveal that the diffraction efficiency of the gratings can be improved by a factor of three by involving the dark reaction process, and the highest diffraction efficiency for gratings can reach 97.8% after optimization. Therefore, the dark reaction can greatly enhance the optical performance of acrylate-based holographic gratings and other optical elements, thus holding great potential for many applications.

In order to develop flexible thermoelectric materials with thermoelectric and mechanical properties, in this study, we designed and synthesized polythiophene derivatives with branched ethylene glycol polar side-chains named P3MBTEMT, which were used in combination with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to prepare composite thin films and flexible thermoelectric devices. A comparison was made with a polymer named P3(TEG)T, which has a polar alkoxy linear chain. The UV-vis results indicated that the larger steric hindrances of the branched ethylene glycol side-chain in P3MBTEMT could inhibit its self-aggregation and had a stronger interaction with the SWCNTs compared to that of P3(TEG)T, which was also confirmed using Raman spectroscopy. When the mass ratio of SWCNTs to P3MBTEMT was 9:1 (represented as P3MBTEMT/SWCNTs-0.9), the composite film exhibited the highest thermoelectric properties with a power factor of 446.98 μW m−1 K−2, which was more than two times higher than that of P3(TEG)T/SWCNTs-0.9 (215.08 μW m−1 K−2). The output power of the thermoelectric device with P3MBTEMT/SWCNTs-0.9 was 2483.92 nW at 50 K, which was 1.66 times higher than that of P3(TEG)T/SWCNTs-0.9 (1492.65 nW). Furthermore, the P3MBTEMT/SWCNTs-0.5 showed superior mechanical properties compared to P3(TEG)T/SWCNTs-0.5. These results indicated that the mechanical and thermoelectric performances of polymer/SWCNT composites could be significantly improved by adding polar branched side-chains to conjugated polymers. This study provided a new strategy for creating high-performing novel flexible thermoelectric materials.

In this study, we introduce a novel model, the Combined Model, composed of a conditional denoising diffusion model (SR3) and an enhanced residual network (EResNet), for reconstructing high-resolution turbulent flow fields from low-resolution flow data. The SR3 model is adept at learning the distribution of flow fields. The EResNet architecture incorporates a long skip connection extending from the input directly to the output. This modification ensures the preservation of essential features learned by the SR3, while simultaneously enhancing the accuracy of the flow field. Additionally, we incorporated physical gradient constraints into the loss function of EResNet to ensure that the flow fields reconstructed by the Combined Model are consistent with the direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. Consequently, the high-resolution flow fields reconstructed by the Combined Model exhibit high conformity with the DNS results in terms of flow distribution, details, and accuracy. To validate the effectiveness of the model, experiments were conducted on two-dimensional flow around a square cylinder at a Reynolds number (Re) of 100 and turbulent channel flow at Re = 4000. The results demonstrate that the Combined Model can reconstruct both high-resolution laminar and turbulent flow fields from low-resolution data. Comparisons with a super-resolution convolutional neural network (SRCNN) and an enhanced super-resolution generative adversarial network (ESRGAN) demonstrate that while all three models perform admirably in reconstructing laminar flows, the Combined Model excels in capturing more details in turbulent flows, aligning the statistical outcomes more closely with the DNS results. Furthermore, in terms of L2 norm error, the Combined Model achieves an order of magnitude lower error compared to SRCNN and ESRGAN. Experimentation also revealed that SR3 possesses the capability to learn the distribution of flow fields. This work opens new avenues for high-fidelity flow field reconstruction using deep learning methods.

The consideration of environmental factors is common in current product design. For the purpose of the assessment of recycling properties of a product, quantitative measures have been defined in the literature. The main obstacle in using these measures in practical design is lack of data in typical product models. In this article, a Recycling Product Model (RPM) is presented. The RPM enables calculations of quantitative assessment measures defined in the literature directly from a CAD 3D product model. The term RPM and elements of the RPM are described. The functionality of the software dedicated for the RPM is presented. The use of the RPM is demonstrated based on a case study of an actual CAD 3D product model. The article concludes by outlining the potential use of the RPM for other purposes; the limitations of the RPM are elucidated in the conclusions of the article.

Thesurvival of CESC patients is closely related to the expression of enhancer RNA (eRNA). In this work, we downloaded eRNA expression, clinical, and gene expression data from the TCeA and TCGA portals. A total of 7936 differentially expressed eRNAs were discovered by limma analysis, and the relationship between these eRNAs and survival was analyzed by univariate Cox hazard analysis, LASSO regression, and multivariate Cox hazard analysis to obtain an 8-eRNA model. Risk score heat maps, KM curves, ROC analysis, robustness analysis, and nomograms further indicate that this 8-eRNA model is a novel indicator with high prognostic performance independent of clinicopathological classification. The model divided patients into high-risk and low-risk groups, compared pathway diversity between the two groups through GSEA analysis, and provided potential therapeutic agents for high-risk patients.
