Storage Temperature Affects the Accumulation of Phenolics in Fresh-Cut Melon by Accelerating the Sucrose Decomposition

To accurately evaluate the role of storage temperature in improving the quality of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables, the effects of two storage temperatures (5 °C and 15 °C) on the phenylpropanoid pathway and sucrose metabolism in fresh-cut melon (cv. Yugu) cubes were determined. A higher temperature (15 °C) expedited sucrose decomposition in the melon cubes at the early stage of storage, resulting in higher levels of glucose and fructose. This effect was corroborated by increased activities of acid invertase (AI), neutral invertase (NI), and sucrose synthase cleavage (SS-c), along with higher expressions of CmAI1/2, CmNI1/2, and CmSS1/2 in the melon cubes at 15 °C. Additionally, the higher activity and gene expression of hexokinase in melon cubes at 15 °C led to an increase in the utilization rate of sugars toward downstream metabolic pathways. Moreover, the melon cube storage at 15 °C elevated the activities and gene expressions of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), cinnamic acid 4-hydroxylase (C4H), and 4-coumaric acid: CoA ligase (4CL), thereby increasing the synthesis of phenolics. Sucrose showed a significant negative correlation with PAL, C4H, and 4CL, as well as with CmPAL5/7 and CmC4H1/3. However, hexokinase displayed a significant positive correlation with PAL, C4H, and 4CL, as well as with CmPAL1, CmPAL3-9, CmC4Hs, and Cm4CLs. These findings demonstrate that a higher-temperature storage of melon cubes can accelerate the phenylpropanoid pathway and sucrose metabolism by regulating the activity and gene expression of related enzymes, thereby inducing phenolic accumulation. These results also indicate that lower-temperature storage is not conducive to the conversion of sugars into phenolics in fresh-cut melon. Therefore, the temperature can be appropriately and briefly raised in the production and preservation process of fresh-cut melon to obtain higher levels of phenolics. Full article

Caspase-8, a member of the caspase family, is an initiating caspase and plays a crucial role in apoptosis. In this study, the full-length cDNA of caspase8-like (CASP8-like) was isolated from Crassostrea hongkongensis (C. hongkongensis) by RACE-PCR. ChCASP8-like contained a 1599-bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding 533 amino acids with two conserved death effector domains (DEDs) and a cysteine aspartase cysteine structural domain (CASc). Amino acid sequence comparison showed that ChCASP8-like shared the highest identity (85.4%) with CASP8-like of C. angulata. The tissue expression profile showed that ChCASP8-like was constitutively expressed in gills, hepatopancreas, mantle, adductor muscle, hemocytes and gonads, and was significantly upregulated in hemocytes, hepatopancreas and gills under hyper-salinity stress. The apoptosis-related genes, including ATR, CHK1, BCL-XL, CASP8-like, CASP9 and CASP3, were significantly activated by hyper-salinity stress, but were remarkably inhibited by ChCASP8-like silencing. The caspase 8 activity was increased by 1.7-fold after hyper-salinity stress, and was inhibited by 9.4% by ChCASP8-like silencing. Moreover, ChCASP8-like silencing clearly alleviated the apoptosis resulting from hyper-salinity stress. These results collectively demonstrated that ChCASP8-like played a crucial role in inducing apoptosis against hyper-salinity stress. Full article

Metal-coordinated hydrogels are becoming increasingly popular in the biomedical field due to their unique properties. However, the mechanism behind gel forming involving metal ions is not yet fully understood. In this work, terahertz spectroscopy was used to investigate the role of interfacial water in the gelation process of copper ion-coordinated poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels. The results showed that the binding of copper ions could alter the interfacial hydration dynamics of the poly(vinyl alcohol) polymers. Combined with the results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), we propose a possible hydration layer-mediated mechanism for the formation of cooper ion-coordinated hydrogel during the freeze–thaw cycle. These results highlight the value of terahertz spectroscopy as a sensor for studying the hydration process in hydrogels and provide an important clue for understanding the mechanism of hydrogelation in ion-coordinated hydrogels. Vitamin C is crucial for physical well-being, and its deficiency can lead to severe health consequences. Biofortification has been used to address this deficiency by enhancing vitamin C in plants. Additionally, soilless agriculture has been used to conserve and optimize water use in comparison to conventional agriculture. While hydrogels have been shown to improve water conservation and are used for biofortification in crops, their application has only been explored in soil-based and hydroponic farming. The aeroponics system is a plant-growing method that has shown potential for increasing yields and biomass while conserving water and nutrients. In this paper, we have developed an aeroponic-compatible medium to grow romaine lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) with eggshell powder (ESP) mixed with calcium-alginate hydrogel as a substrate and nutrient source aiming to conserve water and incorporate vitamin C through biofortification. Herein, lower water spray time and higher intervals, with varied gel types and ESP concentrations, resulted in healthy lettuce growth. Plants treated with 0.5% ascorbic acid-absorbed ESP-mixed alginate hydrogel for biofortification showed higher levels of vitamin C compared to the traditional method. This study suggests using an alginate hydrogel–ESP-based substrate in aeroponics to reduce water usage and enhance plant biofortification of vitamin C. Full article

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) reflect a huge and diversified condition that influences patient quality of life (QoL) both in the physical and mental aspects, especially in older adults who often present comorbidities and may be affected by cognitive decline. The concept of cognitive reserve (CR), which is built through life course experiences, has widely been considered a protective factor against cognitive decline, while the results of QoL in the field of CVDs are still controversial. In particular, there is a lack of evidence that explicitly explores the effects of CR on the QoL in CVD cases since studies have considered only single CR proxies (e.g., education) or specific cardiovascular conditions. Moreover, none of them have considered the motor reserve (MR), another recent concept that considers the amount of physical activity carried out during a lifespan. Its potential role in preventing age-related diseases has been observed, but more clarification is needed given the importance of the physical component in CVDs. The present state-of-the-art review aims to (i) examine how the literature conceives CR and its proxies in CVDs relating to QoL and (ii) integrate the concept of MR in this framework. Implications for clinical practice will also be discussed. Full article

Background: This study was designed to assess the diagnostic utility for FIP of cytology, protein measurement and RT-PCR for feline coronaviruses (FCoV) on aqueous humor (AH), since little information is currently available. Methods: AH samples (n = 85) were collected post-mortem from 13 cats with effusive FIP (E-FIP), 15 with non-effusive FIP (NE-FIP) and 16 without FIP, to perform cytology (n = 83) and RT-PCR (n = 66) and to calculate their sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative likelihood ratios (LR+ and LR−). The protein concentration was measured on 80 fluids. Results: The proportion of RT-PCR positive samples did not differ among groups, while positive cytology was more frequent in samples with FIP (p = 0.042) or positive RT-PCR (p = 0.007). Compared with other groups, the protein concentration was higher in samples with NE-FIP (p = 0.017), positive RT-PCR (p = 0.005) or positive cytology (p < 0.001). The specificity of cytology together with RT-PCR, cytology alone, RT-PCR alone and cytological proteinaceous background were 90.0%, 84.6%, 70.0%, 61.5%, and the LRs 3.48, 2.65, 1.83, 1.64, respectively. However, their sensitivities were low (34.8–63.0%) and their LR− high (0.60–0.72). Conclusions: Based on the LR+, cytology and/or RT-PCR may support the diagnosis when the pre-test probability of FIP is high. The concentration of intraocular protein is a promising marker, especially in NE-FIP. Full article

Mechanomyography (MMG) is an important muscle physiological activity signal that can reflect the amount of motor units recruited as well as the contraction frequency. As a result, MMG can be utilized to estimate the force produced by skeletal muscle. However, cross-talk and time-series correlation severely affect MMG signal recognition in the real world. These restrict the accuracy of dynamic muscle force estimation and their interaction ability in wearable devices. To address these issues, a hypothesis that the accuracy of knee dynamic extension force estimation can be improved by using MMG signals from a single muscle with less cross-talk is first proposed. The hypothesis is then confirmed using the estimation results from different muscle signal feature combinations. Finally, a novel model (improved grey wolf optimizer optimized long short-term memory networks, i.e., IGWO-LSTM) is proposed for further improving the performance of knee dynamic extension force estimation. The experimental results demonstrate that MMG signals from a single muscle with less cross-talk have a superior ability to estimate dynamic knee extension force. In addition, the proposed IGWO-LSTM provides the best performance metrics in comparison to other state-of-the-art models. Our research is expected to not only improve the understanding of the mechanisms of quadriceps contraction but also enhance the flexibility and interaction capabilities of future rehabilitation and assistive devices. Exploring Consumer Preferences and Challenges in Hybrid Meat Products: A Conjoint Analysis of Hotdogs

Plant-based meat has been the primary strategy to reducing meat consumption. While this category has demonstrated success, with the market value estimated to reach USD 20 billion by 2023, the subsequent reduction in meat consumption has not been proportionate. An alternative approach is hybrid products, which are thought to produce products that more closely resemble meat products. However, whether consumers will be willing to purchase hybrid products remains uncertain. Therefore, the present study uses a conjoint analysis approach to assess the product features driving the selection of a hybrid hotdog. This approach uncovers factors driving consumers’ purchase intentions for hybrid meat products when offered as a choice against 100% plant-based and 100% beef products. In an online survey, participants (n = 454; 45.6% female) were asked to select the product they would be most willing to purchase, varying in four characteristics: protein source, price, fat content, and price. Following this task, participants answered questions related to meat attachment, food neophobia, health, ecological, social, and moral motives regarding food consumption. The results revealed that protein source was the most important factor driving product selection, followed by price, fat, and packaging claims (35%, 24%, 21%, and 20% relative importance, respectively). In this study, hybrid hotdogs were the least preferred to beef and plant-based (−16, −2.5, and 18 part-worth utility, respectively). These product-specific attributes (protein, fat, and price) had distinct relationships with the choices of hybrid, plant-based, and hybrid hotdogs, with these factors together explaining slightly more variability in the selection of hybrid (9%) compared to plant-based (7%) and beef hotdogs (4%). For hybrid hotdogs, protein had the greatest influence (B = −1.2) followed by fat (B = −0.8) and price (B = −0.5). Interestingly, person-related parameters (health, meat attachment, ethics, and food neophobia) had no relationship with the selection of hybrid hotdogs, contrary to plant-based (7%) and beef hotdogs (5%). This influence of the different parameters on the selection of hybrid meat is thought to be due to the lack of consumer knowledge and familiarity with hybrid products. The current understanding of plant-based products may not correspond to hybrid products. Engaging with consumers during the development of these products is critical to ensure consumer acceptance and thus support the transition to a more sustainable diet. Full article

Well Selection for CO2 Huff-n-Puff in Unconventional Oil Reservoirs Based on Improved Fuzzy Method

The implementation of CO2 huff-n-puff in unconventional oil reservoirs represents a green development technology that integrates oil recovery and carbon storage, emphasizing both efficiency and environmental protection. A rational well selection method is crucial for the success of CO2 huff-n-puff development. This paper initially identifies eight parameters that influence the effectiveness of CO2 huff-n-puff development and conducts a systematic analysis of the impact of each factor on development effectiveness. A set of factors for well selection decisions is established with seven successful CO2 huff-n-puff cases. Subsequently, the influencing factors are classified into positive, inverse, and moderate indicators. By using an exponential formulation, a method for calculating membership degrees is calculated to accurately represent the nonlinearity of each parameter’s influence on development, resulting in a dimensionless fuzzy matrix. Furthermore, with the oil exchange ratio serving as a pivotal parameter reflecting development effectiveness, recalibration of weighting factors is performed in conjunction with the dimensionless fuzzy matrix. The hierarchical order of weighting factors, from primary to secondary, is as follows: porosity, reservoir temperature, water saturation, formation pressure, reservoir thickness, crude oil density, crude oil viscosity, and permeability. The comprehensive decision factor and oil exchange ratio exhibit a positive correlation, affirming the reliability of the weighting factors. Finally, utilizing parameters of the Ordos Basin as a case study, the comprehensive decision factor is calculated, with a value of 0.617, and the oil exchange ratio is predicted as 0.354 t/t, which falls between the Chattanooga and Eagle Ford reservoirs. This approach, which incorporates exponential membership degrees and recalibrated weighting factors derived from actual cases, breaks the limitations of linear membership calculation methods and human factors in expert scoring methods utilized in existing decision-making methodologies. It furnishes oilfield decision-makers with a swifter and more precise well selection method. Full article

Lipedema is a chronic, idiopathic, and painful disease characterized by an excess of adipose tissue in the extremities. The goal of this study is to characterize the gene expression of estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ), G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER), and ER-metabolizing enzymes: hydroxysteroid 17-beta dehydrogenase (HSD17B1, 7, B12), cytochrome P450 (CYP19A1), hormone-sensitive lipase (LIPE), enzyme steroid sulfatase (STS), and estrogen sulfotransferase (SULT1E1), which are markers in Body Mass Index (BMI) and age-matched non-lipedema (healthy) and lipedema ASCs and spheroids. Flow cytometry and cellular proliferation assays, RT-PCR, and Western Blot techniques were used to determine the expression of ERs and estrogen-metabolizing enzymes. In 2D monolayer culture, estrogen increased the proliferation and the expression of the mesenchymal marker, CD73, in hormone-depleted (HD) healthy ASCs compared to lipedema ASCs. The expression of ERβ was significantly increased in HD lipedema ASCs and spheroids compared to corresponding healthy cells. In contrast, ERα and GPER gene expression was significantly decreased in estrogen-treated lipedema spheroids. CYP19A1 and LIPE gene expressions were significantly increased in estrogen-treated healthy ASCs and spheroids, respectively, while estrogen upregulated the expression of PPAR-ϒ2 and ERα in estrogen-treated lipedema-differentiated adipocytes and spheroids. These results indicate that estrogen may play a role in adipose tissue dysregulation in lipedema. Full article

Serum Adiponectin Predicts COVID-19 Severity

Adiponectin is primarily known for its protective role in metabolic diseases, and it also possesses immunoregulatory properties. Elevated levels of adiponectin have been observed in various inflammatory diseases. However, studies investigating adiponectin levels in the serum of COVID-19 patients have yielded conflicting results. This study aimed to assess serum adiponectin levels in 26 healthy controls, as well as in 64 patients with moderate and 60 patients with severe COVID-19, to determine a potential association between serum adiponectin and the severity of COVID-19. Serum adiponectin levels in severe COVID-19 patients were significantly lower than in those with moderate disease and healthy controls, who exhibited similar serum adiponectin levels. Among patients with moderate disease, positive correlations were observed between serum adiponectin and C-reactive protein levels. Of note, serum adiponectin levels of severe COVID-19 cases were comparable between patients with and without dialysis or vasopressor therapy. Superinfection with bacteria did not exert a notable influence on serum adiponectin levels in patients with severe disease. Patients who were diagnosed with severe COVID-19 and vancomycin-resistant enterococci bacteremia showed a significant reduction in their serum adiponectin levels. An analysis conducted on the entire cohort, including both moderate and severe COVID-19 patients, showed that individuals who did not survive had lower serum adiponectin levels when compared to those who survived. In summary, this study highlights a decrease in serum adiponectin levels in severe COVID-19 cases, indicating the potential utility of adiponectin as an additional biomarker for monitoring disease severity in COVID-19 or critical illnesses in general. Background: Anticoagulation therapy plays a crucial role in the management of atrial fibrillation (AF) by significantly reducing the risk of stroke. Direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) became preferred over warfarin due to their superior safety and efficacy profile. Assessing adherence to anticoagulation therapy is necessary in clinical practice for optimising patient outcomes and treatment efficacy, thus emphasising its significance. Methods: A retrospective study utilised the Latvian National Health Service reimbursement prescriptions database, covering prescriptions for AF and flutter from January 2012 to December 2022. The proportion of days covered method was selected for adherence assessment, categorising it into three groups: (1) below 80%, (2) between 80% and 90%, and (3) above 90%. Results: A total of 1,646,648 prescriptions were analysed. Dabigatran prescriptions started declining after 2020, coinciding with a decrease in warfarin prescriptions since 2018. The total adherence levels to DOAC therapy were 69.4%. Only 44.2% of users achieved an adherence level exceeding 80%. The rate of paper prescriptions decreased from 98.5% in 2017 to 1.3% in 2022. Additionally, the utilisation of international non-proprietary names reached 79.7% in 2022. Specifically, 16.7% of patients selected a single pharmacy, whereas 27.7% visited one or two pharmacies. Meanwhile, other patients obtained medicines from multiple pharmacies. Conclusions: The total adherence level to DOAC therapy is evaluated as low and there was no significant difference in age, gender, or “switcher” status among adherence groups. The aim of this study was to explore the role that healthcare professionals, such as pediatricians, psychologists, psychiatrists and sexologists, play in supporting trans children and adolescents in their transition processes. To this end, 22 life stories written by parents of trans children and adolescents who had undergone social transition were collected, and a qualitative analysis was carried out using MAXQDA software. For this purpose, three key periods were considered in the stories: before, during and after the transition. Among other aspects, the stories highlight a major lack of understanding on the part of the professionals who should support trans children and adolescents, and their families, in their transition processes. Parents described the attitude of those professionals who actively listened to their children’s needs and were cooperative as positive, even if they do not have the necessary training. The need for specific training in diversity is one of the main conclusions of this study. Full article

Barriers to accessing care and misinterpretations of ischemic heart disease symptoms due to lack of awareness contribute to women’s delay in seeking care. Women may delay seeking treatment for up to 3 h or even up to 5 days. They often perceive themselves to be at low risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and prioritize family responsibilities or household chores. The causes of this delay are multifactorial and influence the decision-making process, particularly in the pre-hospital phase. The objective of this study protocol is to evaluate prodromal symptoms and identify risk behaviors in women with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This is a protocol for a multicenter study that will be conducted using the mixed-method methodology using the McSweeney Acute and Prodromal Myocardial Infarction Symptom Survey (MAPMISS) to evaluate symptoms and semi-structured interviews to investigate behaviors. This study protocol is intended to fill an important knowledge gap on premonitory and acute symptoms of AMI in women in Italy, as well as to understand the causes and mechanisms underlying delays in accessing healthcare services during an acute event such as AMI. The investigation of this issue will facilitate the removal of gender-related inequalities in the diagnosis and treatment of acute myocardial infarction while also fostering dialogue on the barriers to behavior change. Considering the requirements of the actual production scheduling process, the utilization of the genetic programming hyper-heuristic (GPHH) approach to automatically design dispatching rules (DRs) has recently emerged as a popular optimization approach. However, the decision objects and decision environments for routing and sequencing decisions are different in the dynamic flexible job shop scheduling problem (DFJSSP), leading to different required feature information. Traditional algorithms that allow these two types of scheduling decisions to share one common feature set are not conducive to the further optimization of the evolved DRs, but instead introduce redundant and unnecessary search attempts for algorithm optimization. To address this, some related studies have focused on customizing the feature sets for both routing and sequencing decisions through feature selection when solving single-objective problems. While being effective in reducing the search space, the selected feature sets also diminish the diversity of the obtained DRs, ultimately impacting the optimization performance. Consequently, this paper proposes an improved GPHH with dual feature weight sets for the multi-objective energy-efficient DFJSSP, which includes two novel feature weight measures and one novel hybrid population adjustment strategy. Instead of selecting suitable features, the proposed algorithm assigns appropriate weights to the features based on their multi-objective contribution, which could provide directional guidance to the GPHH while ensuring the search space. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared to existing studies, the proposed algorithm can significantly enhance the optimization performance and interpretability of energy-efficient DRs. One of the traditional observations about English derivational morphology is that prefixes behave differently from suffixes and are rather close to lexemes. A word-based analysis of prefixes based on this observation has been proposed, but it faces a challenge raised by the seemingly category-changing property of the comparative verb-forming prefix out-. This study aims to solve this problem in a framework that enriches the traditional generative word-based morphology with the concept of the Abstract Lexical Unit. In analyzing data, I pay attention to the degree semantics of comparative out-prefixed verbs and show that the so-called “denominal or deadjectival” out-verbs are produced as hyponyms of already existing out-verbs with sparse semantics. A pseudonym experiment demonstrates that this type of out-verb has a number/rank/action comparative interpretation, and the nouns or adjectives that occupy the head position further specify the object that is counted. The problematic type is related to its base word via head replacement rather than concatenative affixation. Drawing on these new perspective and observations, this paper shows that the traditional finding about the status of English prefixes can be maintained in a word-based approach. Full article

Conventional methods for solving Navier–Stokes (NS) equations to analyze flow fields and aerodynamic forces of airfoils with trailing edge flaps (TEFs) are known for their significant time cost. This study presents a Multi-Task Swin Transformer (MT-Swin-T) deep learning framework tailored for swift prediction of velocity fields and aerodynamic coefficients of TEF-equipped airfoils. The proposed model combines a Swin Transformer (Swin-T) for flow field prediction with a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) dedicated to lift coefficient prediction. Both networks undergo gradient updates through the shared encoder component of the Swin Transformer. Such a trained network model for computational fluid dynamics simulations is both effective and robust, significantly improving the efficiency of complex aerodynamic shape design optimization and flow control. The study further investigates the impact of integrating multi-task learning loss functions, skip connections, and the network’s structural design on prediction accuracy. Additionally, the effectiveness of deep learning in improving the aerodynamic simulation efficiency of airfoils with TEF is examined. Results demonstrate that the multi-task deep learning approach provides accurate predictions for TEF airfoil flow fields and lift coefficients. The strategic combination of these tasks during network training, along with the optimal selection of loss functions, significantly enhances prediction accuracy compared with the single-task network. In a specific case study, the MT-Swin-T model demonstrated a prediction time that was 1/7214 of the time necessitated by CFD simulation. Full article

This study investigates the impact of various instrumentation techniques on material removal and surface changes in titanium (Ti)- and zirconia (Zr) implant discs. Ti- and Zr discs were subjected to standardized experiments using various instruments including airflow, ultrasound, carbide, and diamond burs. Instrumentation was performed for 60 s with continuous automatic motion. Abrasion and changes in surface roughness were assessed using profilometry, while scanning electron microscopy was used to examine morphological changes and particle size. Carbide burs predominantly caused abrasion on Ti discs, while diamond burs caused more abrasion on Zr discs. The Ti discs were more susceptible to surface changes. However, among the materials tested, machined Zr discs treated with diamond burs produced the largest particle. In certain cases, a statistical significance (p < 0.05) was observed between the groups, while in others, there was no considerable difference among the means (p > 0.05). These results highlighted the statistical significance of our findings. These results found diverse alterations in surface characteristics of Ti- and Zr discs due to different instruments, with carbide and diamond burs causing notable effects. The findings highlight the need for a careful balance between promoting healing and minimizing harm during implantoplasty. Full article

This clinical trial investigated the efficacy of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) as an adjunct to conventional scaling and root planing (SRP) in non-surgical periodontal therapy. In a split-mouth randomized controlled trial with 13 patients and 26 periodontal pocket sites, PRF was inserted in test group pockets alongside SRP, while control group pockets received SRP alone. Measurements at baseline and six weeks included probing pocket depths (PPDs), clinical attachment loss (CAL), gingival recession (GR), the plaque index, and the gingivitis index. The wound healing index was assessed at six weeks. The results show statistically significant improvements in the SRP+PRF group compared to SRP alone, demonstrating a better CAL gain (SRP+PRF group: 2.69 ± 0.63; SRP alone group: 4.15 ± 0.69—p-value: 0.001), PPD reduction (SRP+PRF group: 2.62 ± 0.65; SRP alone group: 3.85 ± 0.80—p-value: 0.001), and GR minimization (SRP+PRF group: 0.46 ± 0.62; SRP alone group: 0.81 ± 0.72—p-value: 0.21). The adjunctive use of PRF enhanced healing, reduced pocket depths, decreased tissue morbidity, and minimized gingival recession. This study concludes that PRF placement is effective in 5–6 mm pockets, potentially reducing the number of periodontal treatment sessions needed for pocket closure. Full article

Calcium ions function as key messengers in the context of intracellular signal transduction. The ability of plants to respond to biotic and abiotic stressors is highly dependent on the calcineurin B-like protein (CBL) and CBL-interacting protein kinase (CIPK) signaling network. Here, a comprehensive effort was made to identify all members of the soybean CBL gene family, leading to the identification of 15 total genes distributed randomly across nine chromosomes, including 13 segmental duplicates. All the GmCBL gene subfamilies presented with similar gene structures and conserved motifs. Analyses of the expression of these genes in different tissues revealed that the majority of these GmCBLs were predominantly expressed in the roots. Significant GmCBL expression and activity increases were also observed in response to a range of stress-related treatments, including salt stress, alkaline stress, osmotic stress, or exposure to salicylic acid, brassinosteroids, or abscisic acid. Striking increases in GmCBL1 expression were observed in response to alkaline and salt stress. Subsequent analyses revealed that GmCBL1 was capable of enhancing soybean salt and alkali tolerance through the regulation of redox reactions. These results offer new insight into the complex mechanisms through which the soybean CBL gene family regulates the responses of these plants to environmental stressors, highlighting promising targets for efforts aimed at enhancing soybean stress tolerance. Severe cadmium contamination poses a serious threat to food security and human health. Plant–microbial combined remediation represents a potential technique for reducing heavy metals in soil. The main objective of this study is to explore the remediation mechanism of cadmium-contaminated soil using a combined approach of lawn plants and microbes. The target bacterium Bacillus cereus was selected from cadmium-contaminated soil in mining areas, and two lawn plants (Festuca arundinacea A‘rid III’ and Poa pratensis M‘idnight II’) were chosen as the target plants. We investigated the remediation effect of different concentrations of bacterial solution on cadmium-contaminated soil using two lawn plants through pot experiments, as well as the impact on the soil microbial community structure. The results demonstrate that Bacillus cereus promotes plant growth, and the combined action of lawn plants and Bacillus cereus improves soil quality, enhancing the bioavailability of cadmium in the soil. At a bacterial suspension concentration of 105 CFU/mL, the optimal remediation treatment was observed. The removal efficiency of cadmium in the soil under Festuca arundinacea and Poa pratensis treatments reached 33.69% and 33.33%, respectively. Additionally, the content of bioavailable cadmium in the rhizosphere soil increased by up to 13.43% and 26.54%, respectively. Bacillus cereus increased the bacterial diversity in the non-rhizosphere soil of both lawn plants but reduced it in the rhizosphere soil. Additionally, the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota and Firmicutes, which have potential for heavy metal remediation, increased after the application of the bacterial solution. This study demonstrates that Bacillus cereus can enhance the potential of lawn plants to remediate cadmium-contaminated soil and reshape the microbial communities in both rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils.
